At Kartal Auto, we take pride in restoring and enhancing the elegance of iconic vehicles, such as the Rolls-Royce Phantom I. Recently, we had the privilege of completing a detailed polishing job for a vintage Phantom I, and during the process, we identified a few issues that required expert attention. Below, we detail the issues we encountered and the solutions we implemented to maintain the car’s timeless luxury and performance.

Issue Found:

1. Issue: Paint Oxidation and Fading

  • Problem: The Phantom I’s original paint had experienced significant oxidation and fading due to exposure to the elements over time. This is common with classic cars that have not been properly maintained, resulting in a dull and uneven finish.
  • Solution: We used a multi-step polishing process that involved carefully buffing away the oxidation with fine compounds. After restoring the paint’s shine, we applied a high-quality protective sealant to guard against future oxidation, ensuring the car’s finish remained vibrant for years to come.

2. Issue: Minor Scratches and Swirl Marks

  • Problem: Upon close inspection, our team identified minor scratches and swirl marks on the car’s body. These imperfections, often caused by improper washing or polishing in the past, can detract from the overall luster of the vehicle.
  • Solution: We employed a combination of wet sanding and machine polishing to carefully eliminate these marks. By using various grades of polishing compounds, we smoothed the surface and restored a flawless, mirror-like finish to the car’s body.

3. Issue: Surface Contamination

  • Problem: During the pre-polishing inspection, we found that the car’s surface had several contaminants such as tar, tree sap, and industrial fallout. These contaminants can trap dirt and create blemishes, affecting the final polish and the overall finish.
  • Solution: We performed a thorough decontamination process using a clay bar treatment. This effectively removed any bonded contaminants, leaving the surface clean and smooth, ready for polishing. The result was a more even and reflective surface.

4. Issue: Dull Chrome Trim

  • Problem: The chrome trim on the Rolls-Royce Phantom I had become dull and tarnished over the years, diminishing the overall appeal of the vehicle. This is a common issue with chrome surfaces exposed to environmental factors.
  • Solution: Our specialists carefully restored the chrome trim by using a combination of polishing compounds and soft cloths. After polishing, we applied a protective chrome sealant to prevent tarnishing and to maintain the chrome’s brilliance.

5. Issue: Cloudiness on Headlights

  • Problem: The headlights of the Phantom I showed signs of cloudiness and yellowing, which is a common issue with older vehicles due to UV exposure and weathering. This can impact both the vehicle’s appearance and safety.
  • Solution: We performed a headlight restoration, removing the cloudy layer through wet sanding and polishing. After restoring the lenses, we applied a UV-protective coating to prevent further degradation, ensuring clear and bright headlights.
