At Kartal Auto, we recently had the pleasure of applying Paint Protection Film (PPF) to a Rolls-Royce Phantom I, a vehicle that combines classic luxury with a rich heritage. The Phantom I, being a vintage and highly valuable car, deserves the best protection available to maintain its pristine finish for years to come. Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a clear, durable film that acts as a shield against a variety of road hazards, from rock chips to environmental contaminants. While installing the PPF on this stunning vehicle, we encountered a few issues that required expert attention. Below are the challenges we faced and the solutions we provided.
Issue Found:
1. Issue: Inconsistent Paint Surface
- Problem: Upon examining the Phantom I’s bodywork before the PPF application, we noticed some areas with slight imperfections in the paint, including minor scratches and swirl marks. These imperfections are common on older vehicles and can affect how the film adheres to the surface.
- Solution: Our first step was to carefully polish the entire surface to remove the scratches and swirl marks. Using advanced compounds and techniques, we restored the paint to a smooth and flawless finish. Only once the paint was completely smooth and ready did we apply the PPF, ensuring the film adhered perfectly without any imperfections showing through.
2. Issue: Uneven Surface Texture Due to Previous Resprays
- Problem: Some sections of the Rolls-Royce Phantom I’s body had been resprayed in the past, and the paint texture on these areas was slightly uneven. This can lead to problems when applying PPF, as the film may not adhere properly to uneven surfaces.
- Solution: To address this, we performed a detailed inspection of the resprayed areas and used a light polishing technique to level out the texture of the paint. After achieving a uniform surface, we ensured that the PPF could be applied smoothly across all panels, providing full protection without any gaps or bubbles.
3. Issue: Window and Trim Seal Gaps
- Problem: The Phantom I’s vintage design, with its older seals and trim, presented a challenge when installing the PPF around window edges, door seals, and other intricate areas. These gaps can cause the film to lift or not adhere properly over time.
- Solution: Our team carefully masked off these areas and ensured that the PPF was applied with precision around all window seals and trim. We used cutting-edge tools to trim the film to fit perfectly around these gaps, ensuring a seamless and secure application. Our attention to detail ensured that no edges of the PPF would lift or peel over time.
4. Issue: Bubbles and Imperfections in the Film
- Problem: After applying the PPF to the Phantom I, some minor bubbles appeared under the film due to air pockets trapped during the application process. This is a common issue when working with PPF on large surfaces and curved areas.
- Solution: Our team used a combination of heat and pressure to carefully remove all trapped air and ensure that the film adhered fully to the car’s surface. We also employed a special squeegee technique to smooth out any remaining imperfections, ensuring a flawless finish. After allowing the PPF to set, the result was a smooth, bubble-free, and perfectly protected surface.
5. Issue: Complex Curves and Contours
- Problem: The Rolls-Royce Phantom I features several complex curves and contours, especially along the hood, fenders, and rear quarters. These shapes can make the PPF installation challenging as the film needs to be custom-shaped to fit the car’s unique curves without wrinkling or stretching.
- Solution: To address this challenge, we carefully measured and cut the PPF to match the exact dimensions of the car’s curves. Using heat application and expert precision, we ensured that the film adhered perfectly to every contour, even on the most intricate parts of the car. This meticulous process ensured that the PPF would provide optimal protection while maintaining the vehicle’s elegant appearance.
